What Is Steam Next Fest?
Steam Next Fest is Valve's week-long celebration of upcoming PC games, held three times a year. During the festival, players can try hundreds of free demos, watch developer livestreams and discover games before they launch. The October 2026 edition kicks off on Monday, October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT (7:00 PM CEST) and runs until October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT.
For a small independent studio like ours, Next Fest is the best chance to put The Yard in front of thousands of new players – and to hear directly from you before Early Access begins.
What Is The Yard: Escape from Prison?
The Yard: Escape from Prison is a first-person online co-op prison escape game for up to 6 players, wrapped in a stylized retro look that mixes low-poly models with pixel-art graphics. You're locked inside a maximum-security facility, and your goal is simple: get out. How you do it – and who you take with you – is up to you.
Survive the daily prison routine
Life behind bars runs on a strict schedule. Your day starts locked in your cell, followed by breakfast in the canteen, free time, work shifts, communal showers and lights-out. Show up for roll call, keep your head down and look like a model prisoner – because every missed appointment makes the guards more suspicious.
Work prison jobs, smuggle contraband
The facility offers several prison jobs spread across different sectors:
- License plate pressing – good old hard labor
- Dishwashing & laundry – keep the facility running
- Tailoring – sew uniforms right under the guards' noses
Jobs aren't just a way to pass time. They earn you cash for insider information and character customization, and they're the best places to scavenge and smuggle restricted items for your escape.
Craft your tools and level up your inmate
Crafting in The Yard is tied directly to character progression. Train your Intelligence to crack security systems and build high-tech tools, or build up your Strength to forge heavy-duty gear and handle makeshift weapons. Higher stats unlock specialized escape routes that simply aren't available otherwise.
Stay under the radar
The guards are always watching. Step into a restricted zone at the wrong time and you'll trigger a lockdown. Get caught, and you're headed straight to solitary confinement – and every piece of contraband you've gathered gets confiscated. One mistake can wipe out days of careful planning.
Cooperate… or betray your crew
Every match comes down to one question: escape together or look out for yourself? Pool resources, share intel on guard patrols and pull off a massive coordinated breakout – or use your friends as a distraction, keep the best route to yourself and race them to freedom. When the dust settles, the end-of-match scoreboard reveals who earned the title of ultimate escape artist.
How to Play: Single-Player and 6-Player Online Co-op
The Yard adapts to the way you want to serve your sentence:
| Mode | Players | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | 1 | Stealthy solo heists that rely on your wits |
| Online co-op | up to 6 | Chaotic group breakouts with your whole crew |
Online matches include in-game voice chat, so you can whisper plans in the corridors – or shout a warning when a guard turns the corner. The game also supports Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud and leaderboards.
